From City Hall to Sacred Ground: Honoring Salem’s First Mayor Leverett Saltonstall and Those Who Followed

As part of the Salem 400+ celebration, we invite you to save the date: Saturday, May 9, 2026. Join us for a free special program featuring a keynote lecture on Leverett Saltonstall, followed by an optional self-guided tour of Harmony Grove Cemetery highlighting the graves and lives of these former mayors.
Join Peter Drummey, retired Chief Historian of the Massachusetts Historical Society, on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 AM in the Blake Memorial Chapel at Harmony Grove Cemetery for a lecture on the life and civic contributions of Leverett Saltonstall (1783–1845), the first Mayor of Salem.
Following the lecture, guests are invited to stay for light refreshments and an optional self-guided tour beginning at 1:00 PM. The tour highlights the final resting places of 21 Salem mayors, including Saltonstall, within Harmony Grove Cemetery. No reservation is required to participate in the self-guided tour.
