Salem 400+ commemorates Salem’s quadricentennial while acknowledging the preexisting indigenous community and explores the opportunities and connections of Salem’s multifaceted history while crafting a vision for current and future generations.

Welcome

This land is Naumkeag, or fishing place, where generations of Indigenous peoples lived and passed through for centuries.

From the village upon the Naumkeag River (now known as the North River) to Sachem Nanepashemet’s fortification (now known as Castle Hill), the people of Naumkeag farmed, fished, traded, raised families, discovered and invented, created art, and, above all else, honored the lands upon which you stand today.

We acknowledge that this is Indigenous land and also acknowledge the Massachusett Tribe, who continue to honor and hold this land into the present.

This portrait portrays Squaw Sachem and Nanepashemet, two prominent Tribal leaders of the Naumkeag village and the Pawtucket band of the Massachusett Tribe. This artistic representation was created by Indigenous artist, Chris Pappan, in deep collaboration with the Massachusett Tribal Council.

Century Trees

Salem has committed to planting 400 Century trees for the Quadricentennial. Trees reduce stormwater run off; extend the life of streets; improve local air, soil and water quality; reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide; provide wildlife habitat; increase property values; enhance the attractiveness of a community; and promote human health and wellbeing. This program will plant the next generation of trees as a critical part of our climate change mitigation strategy, and for future residents to enjoy for decades to come.
