Beautification Committee

Salem Is Beautiful

Celebrating Civic Pride Through Beautification

Did you know that for decades, Salem’s Beautification Committee, made up entirely of volunteers, has planted, maintained, and cared for over 50 traffic islands and public garden beds across the city? The mission of the Beautification Committee is to assist the City of Salem in developing and pursuing initiatives that enhance our city’s appearance, foster civic pride, and encourage community involvement from residents of all backgrounds.

As we approach Salem’s 400+ Anniversary, we invite YOU to help make Salem more beautiful than ever.

Ways to Beautify Salem Ahead of the 400+ Celebration

  1. Volunteer Your Time

The Beautification Committee is out weekly and often daily during the summer. Working on garden beds, traffic islands, and public spaces. Volunteers help with everything from picking up litter to watering and planting flowers.

Interested in helping?

Contact Staff Liaison Michael Corley at [mcorley@salem.com] Whether you’re available for a one-time event or want to join regularly, everyone is welcome!

Volunteer garden days are shared via email and social media, as they depend on weather. Most weeks, volunteers meet 2–3 times, including at least one evening session.

  1. Adopt a Traffic Island

Our volunteer network includes everyone from first-time gardeners to seasoned pros. Individuals, businesses, and neighborhood associations are invited to “adopt” one of the many available traffic islands throughout the city.

Sponsorship opportunities include:

$100 – Neighborhood Associations

$200-$400 – Individuals and Businesses

If you’re interested in adopting an island or sponsoring one, reach out to us and we’ll help you find the perfect location.

  1. Donate Tools or Equipment

We’re always in need of extra tools and supplies to support our all-volunteer crew. Items like wheelbarrows, trucks, rakes, and shovels are especially helpful. Landscaping companies and contractors are encouraged to donate time or equipment if they can.

  1. Make a Financial Contribution

Donations help us purchase plants, materials, and signage to keep Salem looking its best.
