SUMMARY:Vintage Baseball Game
DESCRIPTION:Before batting helmets\, before dugouts\, before the designated hitter — there was base ball (two words\, as it was then written). Watching a match played under 1864 rules is less like attending a modern game and more like stepping into a photograph that suddenly comes to life. \nThe players take the field in period wool uniforms\, suspenders and all\, with no gloves — catching a ball barehanded was simply part of the game. Pitchers deliver the ball underhand in a smooth\, stiff-armed motion\, and the batter — called the “striker” — has considerable say in where he’d like the pitch thrown. \nCome step back in time and see baseball the way it was meant to be played! Right on the Salem Common the Providence Grays versus Dirigio Base Ball Club of Maine !

SUMMARY:The 389th Anniversary of the First Muster
DESCRIPTION:The 389th Annual First Muster marks another milestone in the living legacy of America’s oldest military tradition. In 1637\, the East Regiment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony assembled on this very ground for the first time — an act that gave birth to what we know today as the National Guard. Salem has never stopped honoring that moment.\nThis year’s commemoration takes on special meaning as part of Salem 400+\, the city’s year-long celebration of 400 years of history\, community\, and resilience. The First Muster is one of the oldest chapters in that story — proof that Salem has always been a place where neighbors stand up\, show up\, and serve.\nCome celebrate Salem’s most historic tradition — and the city proud enough to have started it all.
