SUMMARY:"American Admiralty Law in Salem and Boston\, 1800–1840\, and Its Legacy" Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Judge William G. Young explores how Salem and Boston maritime conflicts (1800–1840) shaped early American admiralty law post Revolution. \nLearn about the establishment of American Admiralty Law in Salem and Boston following the American Revolution\, tracing how early 19th-century maritime conflicts in these port cities shaped the development of American jurisprudence. The lecture will examine how disputes over cargo\, salvage\, and prize cases during the period tested and refined the young nation’s legal system. Judge Young will also discuss the pivotal role played by Judge John Davis in establishing practical precedents for handling these cases — precedents that would go on to influence the broader framework of American admiralty law. \nAbout the Speaker: \nThe Honorable William G. Young has served as a Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts since 1985\, following eight years on the Massachusetts Superior Court. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School\, he served as a U.S. Army officer before beginning his legal career as law clerk to Chief Justice Raymond S. Wilkins of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. He later practiced law with Bingham\, Dana & Gould and served as Special Assistant Attorney General and Chief Counsel to Governor Francis W. Sargent. An acclaimed teacher of evidence and trial advocacy\, Judge Young has taught at Harvard\, Boston College\, and Boston University. He is also a prolific legal scholar and the author of several influential works on evidence\, trial practice\, and federal jurisprudence. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:"Hannah in Context: What Really Happened\, and Why Did it Matter?" Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Captain Michael Rutstein recounts the events leading to the battle between schooner Hannah and HMS Nautilus\, Oct. 1775. \nJoin Captain Michael Rutstein as he covers the events leading up to the famous battle between the armed American schooner Hannah and HMS Nautilus in October 1775. He will walk us step by step through the engagement and wrap up with the repercussions of this event and its impact on the course of the Revolution here on the North Shore. \nMichael Rutstein: After drafting and then reluctantly abandoning a business plan to create a replica of Hannah\, Rutstein commissioned local boatbuilder Harold Burnham to build a representation of the 1812 Salem privateer FAME in 2003. For 23 seasons\, FAME sailed out of Pickering Wharf in Salem to critical and popular acclaim. In April 2026\, FAME was sold to the Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships in Boston. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:"Colonial Cures for Scurvy" Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Scurvy —a debilitating disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C\, was a scourge among sailors\, with hundreds of thousands perishing during the colonial period\, and during the American Revolutionary War it became a critical strategic factor that severely weakened the British Royal Navy and affected the health of the Continental Army. The efforts to improve healthy conditions on-board sailing vessels were vital for Salem’s maritime success. \nBefore the concept of vitamin deficiency was known to the world\, physicians struggled to find what caused the disease. That did not stop them from developing both herbal and chemical treatments with mixed results. The story of finding a true cure spans the centuries\, from ancient references to sailors’ superstitions to the birth of “clinical trials” in the 18th century.\nJoin Dan Marshall as he dives into both European and American colonial sources that shed light on the effects of scurvy on the body and the many colonial cures recorded for posterity. Afterwards\, he will demonstrate the tools and techniques of turning simple ingredients into medicine in the 17th & 18th centuries. \nDan Marshall is a museum professional who has shared his love of history with the public for over 25 years. He has created and presented countless hands-on public history events\, school tour programs\, and lectures on a wide range of historical topics. With experience at Colonial Williamsburg\, The House of the Seven Gables\, Lexington Historical Society\, and the City of Salem\, Dan is currently serving as Vice President of the Salem Historical Society. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the National Park Service and Essex Heritage as part of a series; Conflict & Community: Salem\, Essex County\, and the American Revolution. As the nation marks the 250th anniversary of American independence\, this dynamic series brings together diverse voices and experts to examine the Revolution through its many perspectives\, lived experiences\, and lasting legacies.
