SUMMARY:Who Will Be Salem's Next Poet Laureate? Meet the Finalists on August 20 for Public Reading
DESCRIPTION:Mayor Dominick Pangallo and Salem Public Library Director Tara Mansfield invite the community to the Poet Laureate Finalist Readings on Thursday\, August 20th\, starting at 6:00 PM at Charlotte Forten Park\, located at 289 Derby Street\, Salem MA 01970. \nAfter a thorough review of 6 applications\, the Poet Laureate Selection Committee has narrowed down the field to three exceptional local poets: M.P. Carver (She/Hers)\, Jo Faeyln Bova (They/Them)\, and D. Shine (They/Them). \n“We are proud to present these talented poets\, who each bring a unique voice and perspective\,” Mayor Pangallo remarked\, “I am grateful to the dedicated selection committee of city staff and volunteers who have put in so much thought and hard work to begin this program.  I encourage all community members to attend this exciting poetry reading.” \nEach finalist will read selections from their work for 15 minutes\, followed by an open Q&A where members of the public are invited to ask our finalists questions. Free light refreshments and snacks will be provided. Funding is made possible thanks to the contribution from the Salem Redevelopment Authority. \nM.P. Carver (She/Her) is a poet and visual artist from Salem\, MA. She is Director of the Massachusetts Poetry Festival\, miCrO-Founder of Molecule: a tiny lit mag\, and teaches at Salem State University.  She has received funding or fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, the Essex Community Foundation\, the T.S. Eliot Foundation\, and Disquiet International. In 2022 her poem “You & God & I” was awarded the New England Poetry Club’s E.E. Cummings Prize. Her chapter book\, Selachipmorpha\, was published by Incessant Pipe in 2015\, and a recent chapbook from Lily Poetry Review Books\, Hard Up\, is available now. More at mpcarver.com \nJo Faelyn Bova (They/Them) is a queer nonbinary faerie\, writer\, artist\, local cryptid\, community organizer\, activist\, model\, higher education professional\, drag performer\, overall siren\, and lover of willow trees from Salem\, Massachusetts.  They earned a BA in Creative Writing from Salem State University (Summa Cum Laude) where they received the Creativity Award in Creative Writing and the Silver Key Award. They are the founder of Salem Literary Coven\, a costumed poetry performance group\, that has performed at the 2025 and 2026 Salem Arts Festivals seeking to mix whimsical energy with classic poetry readings. More than anything\, jo wants to continue fostering a strong arts community in Salem through their work\, believing that everyone is creative; you can find jo on Instagram @jofaelynbova or just spot them walking around a local art fair. \nD. Shine (They/Them) is a poet and social worker who was born and raised in Massachusetts. They have been writing poetry since they were introduced to the medium as a kid at a Shakespeare summer camp. In 2024\, they self-published “Nowhere Left Behind\,” a collection of over 50 poems written in the prior decade.  They host a recurring poetry night in Salem called “House of Poems” where local artists are invited to share their writing. They live in Salem with their wife and two cats\, and in their free time enjoy bicycling\, crossword puzzles\, and watching movies. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join the City of Salem in celebrating Juneteenth!\nCharlotte Forten Park\nSalem’s Juneteenth Jam Festival III will take place on Friday\, June 19th at 11:30am\, at Charlotte Forten Park at 289 Derby Street. The keynote will be delivered by History Alive’s Sarah Parker Remond.  \n“This year we are honoring Sarah Parker Remond on the anniversary of her 200th birthday\,” said Mayor Pangallo. “She was a trailblazer and freedom fighter\, with global impact\, but roots here in Salem. We hope that by partnering with History Alive and bringing Sarah Parker Remond to our community\, people will be able to learn more about her life and her legacy.” \nImmediately following\, attendees are invited to participate in a public reading and community discussion activity of Frederick Douglass’s famous speech The Meaning of The Fourth Of July for the Negro led by Michael Corley.  \nFollowing the conclusion of the public reading\, Salem’s Juneteenth Jam will feature games\, activities\, crafts\, face painting\, music\, free custom Salem 400+ bucket hats\, free food from Butter Ur Biscuit\, and Red Velvet Ice Cream from Holy Cow Ice Cream. There will also be a pop-up market featuring local Black-owned businesses and Black non-profits and service organizations. Community partners such as the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salem\, the Salem Public Library\, the House of the Seven Gables\, and more will also be attending with free activities and giveaways. Salem Historical Tours will offer a free hour-long Black history tour of Salem\, which will start at 1:30pm from Charlotte Forten Park. Signs-ups for this tour will begin at 1:00pm\, with a limit of 40 available spots.   \nThe City of Salem is partnering with the Peabody Essex Museum to bring Jo-Mo-Mé Dance Arts to the Jam this year\, with a contemporary ballet performance exploring connection\, individuality\, and human resilience through fluid movement and striking physicality. Featuring two dynamic duets and a powerful solo\, the works blend athleticism with emotional depth\, embodying the company’s bold artistic voice and commitment to storytelling through dance. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of The Real Pirate Museum\, the Jam will also feature live music from Coco Brown and The Invitation\, led by Nicole Harris. They will kick off their set at 2:30pm and wrap up at 4pm.   \nPeabody Essex Museum\nAdmission will be free to the Peabody Essex Museum on Juneteenth. Community members are invited to celebrate through art\, music\, and movement. At 11:30am and 1:00pm\, artist-led community circles will invite participants into spaces of reflection\, conversation\, and collective expression\, while live music fills the Museum’s Main Atrium with rhythms of joy and connection. In the afternoon\, experience an electrifying outdoor drum and dance performance by Black Experimental Arts Theater\, bringing powerful traditions of movement and cultural celebration to life. All are welcome to gather\, celebrate\, and reflect in this dynamic day of community-centered programming.  \nArmory Park\nStop by Armory Park at 4:30pm for a special performance by Black Experimental Arts Theater. This electrifying outdoor drum and dance performance brings together the powerful traditions of movement and cultural celebration to life. Thanks to the Peabody Essex Museum for sponsoring the performance.  \nSalem Common\nFollowing a community-wide poll\, residents have chosen to screen Pixar’s 2020 film “Soul” on Salem Common to wrap up the 2026 Juneteenth festivities. Free popcorn will be provided\, thanks to the generosity of CinemaSalem. The movie is expected to start at 8:30pm and is approximately 101 minutes long.   \nAll Juneteenth events in Salem are family-friendly\, free\, and open to anyone who wishes to attend.   \nThe Frederick Douglass reading is made possible by a grant from Mass Humanities\, which provided funding through the Mass Cultural Council.
