SUMMARY:PEM Reads: Poet in High Street Park
DESCRIPTION:Join the PEM Reads community for a live book launch! Hear Salem’s first-ever poet laureate J.D. Scrimgeour read from his new work Poet in High Street Park: Prose & Poetry for Modern Salem. \nDavid Snider\, PEM’s Director of Learning & Community Engagement\, will host an author talk with Scrimgeour followed by a light reception and book signing. \nPoet in High Street Park: Prose & Poetry for Modern Salem is a love song to Salem by a writer who has grounded himself in the everyday realities of living in the city for the past 30 years\, from playgrounds to classrooms to ballfields. It is testimony that\, Halloween hoopla aside\, people live here. Finding the universal in the local\, this book asks who we are\, and who we want to be. \nPEM Reads celebrates the art of literature and the creative act of writing through a year-round series of collaborative book club readings and author events\, both in person and online. By gathering to read and discuss world-class literature and meet authors\, PEM Reads seeks to deepen our sense of community and celebrate great storytelling. We hope you’ll join us! \nEvent in person at Morse Auditorum\, included with the price of admission. The PEM is always free for Salem residents. \nRegistration is encouraged. Register here!

SUMMARY:Artist Talk | Charla de los Artistas. Creative Neighbors | Vecinos Creativos: Punto Urban Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk with Punto Urban Art Museum’s (PUAM) Creative Neighbors muralists to celebrate their work and strengthen the bridge between local artists and the museum. \nThe Creative Neighbors project brings in local and regional artists to create a series of murals in Salem’s Point neighborhood (El Punto). The theme for this year’s murals\, “Raíces | Roots\,” prompted the selected muralists to reflect on their heritage and the concept of being rooted. In addition to their large-scale murals\, six of the muralists created accompanying canvas works for display at PEM. \nThis project is made possible by PEM’s partnership and is an official part of Punto Urban Art Museum’s Salem 400+ offerings. Canvases by six of the muralists will be on display in PEM’s Main Atrium from November 15–December 2\, with potential remounts in 2026 as part of PEM’s Salem 400+ celebrations. \nIncluded with Admission. Salem residents and people who work in Salem receive free general admission upon presentation of a business card or employee ID at the admissions desk.

SUMMARY:Red Coat March to Salem's North Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of “Leslie’s Retreat\,” a pivotal moment that marked Salem’s first stand against British authority and helped spark the American Revolution. \nThe Grand Reenactor March will happen at 11am\, before the march\, there will be a speaking portion at St. Peter’s San Pedro Episcopal Church. Note that the spectacle will be an event for the public to view from North Bridge. The general public will NOT march with the reenactors! Those interested only in seeing the parade should plan to be at North Bridge at 11am sharp on February 22. This is a once in a lifetime event\, not to be missed! \n \nOn February 26\, 1775\, just weeks before the shots at Lexington and Concord\, Salem witnessed what could have been the first battle of the American Revolution. When British Lt. Colonel Alexander Leslie and his troops attempted to seize colonial weapons\, they were met with remarkable resistance at Salem’s North Bridge—where courage\, diplomacy\, and level-headed leadership prevented bloodshed but demonstrated American resolve. \nExperience history come alive as we recreate this dramatic confrontation at its original location. Watch as historical reenactors portray the tense standoff between British troops and Salem’s citizens. \nBe part of this remarkable commemoration as we honor the courage\, wisdom\, and restraint shown by both sides during this critical moment in American history. This event offers a unique opportunity to witness and understand how Salem’s citizens stood firm in defense of their rights while avoiding the outbreak of war—if only for a few more weeks. \n  \nFree and open to the public!

SUMMARY:Red Coat March Preliminary Speaking Portion
