SUMMARY:Pirates! The Battle For Derby Street
DESCRIPTION:On April 25th\, Salem’s historic Derby Street waterfront transforms into a lively pirates and privateers venue. “Pirates! The Battle for Derby Street” is a swashbuckling festival packed with adventure\, history\, music and mischief for the pirates in all of us. At the heart of the festival is an epic and playful rivalry between two legendary figures: Captain John Turner of The House of the Seven Gables fame and Captain Black Sam Bellamy\, captain of the ill-fated Whydah Gally\, a pirate ship which wrecked off of the Massachusetts coast\, featured in Salem’s own Real Pirates museum. Expect a bustling pirate thoroughfare full of treasure maps and prizes\, live pirate skirmishes\, maritime lectures and demonstrations; music\, roaming performers\, artisan merchants and themed food and drink specials from local restaurants. Costumes welcome for photo ops and plenty of other surprises await! \nParticipants will want to check in starting at 10 am to pick up a treasure map and guide to the Derby Street participating merchant crew\, where treasure hunt clues will be furnished. A concluding event will take place at the end of the day featuring prizes for the winners of the treasure hunt and more entertainment. The event will conclude during daylight hours but participants are encouraged to stay longer in the area to enjoy after-festival dining\, treats and shopping in the area. \nCostumes welcome! Wear comfortable walking shoes. And bring your rain gear in case of inclement weather.

SUMMARY:"General John Glover: Unsung Hero of the Revolution" Lecture and Performance
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a memorable evening of music\, history\, and conversation celebrating the life\, military service\, and lasting legacy of one of the American Revolution’s most celebrated — and often overlooked — figures. \nThe evening kicks off with a rousing performance by Scurvy Fellows Indeed\, a spirited crew of 18th-century privateers who will entertain with rollicking sea chanteys — audience sing-along strongly encouraged! \nHistorian Robert Booth then takes us through the compelling story of John Glover\, who was born in Salem and raised in nearby Marblehead\, used his maritime roots and family ties to shape his path to becoming a Revolutionary War hero. \nHe is followed by Larry Sands — Captain of Glover’s Marblehead Regiment — who brings Glover’s battlefield career to life with a lively overview of his major engagements and accomplishments.\nNancy Lusignan Schultz\, Chair of the Swampscott Historical Commission and President of Save the Glover! Inc.\, rounds out the presentations with the latest news on the ongoing effort to preserve General Glover’s historic farmhouse. \nThis program is part of the Conflict & Community: Salem\, Essex County\, and the American Revolution lecture series. This series is a partnership between Essex Heritage and Salem Maritime National Historical Park and highlights the unique role of Essex County communities during the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:Found Treasures from City Hall Exhibition Opens
DESCRIPTION:Over the years\, civic employees have uncovered remarkable pieces of our community’s past in the most unexpected places. Tucked behind filing cabinets\, nestled in dusty corners\, and forgotten in the recesses of municipal buildings\, these artifacts tell stories that official records sometimes miss. \nAmong our discoveries: a check dating back to 1864\, its ink faded but still legible\, offering a glimpse into Civil War-era commerce. A pair of iron manacles\, heavy with the weight of difficult history\, remind us of chapters we must remember and reckon with. Local artwork has resurfaced\, along with yellowed newspapers\, maps and photographs that captured the headlines and concerns of generations past. \nEach item represents a moment frozen in time—a transaction\, a creation\, a record of daily life in our community. Together\, they form an accidental archive\, preserved not through careful curation but through the simple passage of time and the watchful eyes of employees who recognized significance in what others might have discarded. \nThese aren’t just artifacts; they’re connections to the people who came before us\, doing the work of community in their own time\, leaving traces of their presence for us to discover and preserve. \nHours for the exhibit are as follows: \nFriday\, May 1\, 12 pm-4 pm\nSaturday\, May 2\, 12 pm-6 pm\nSunday\, May 3\, 12 pm-6 pm\nThursday\, May 7\, 3 pm-7 pm\nFriday\, May 8\, 12 pm-4 pm\nSaturday\, May 9\, 12 pm-4 pm\nSunday\, May 10\, 12 pm-4 pm

SUMMARY:Hello Day: Salem Says Hello Again!
DESCRIPTION:On May 1\, 1971\, Mayor Samuel Zoll proclaimed it “Hello Day.” Fire station bells rang across Salem at noon. Residents poured into the streets — along Essex Street\, across the Common — to do something radical in its simplicity: say hello to each other. \nA rock band made up of Salem High students played on the Common. A conceptual artist circled overhead in a plane\, photographing the whole thing from above. Channel 5 showed up. A teenager named Marian Sonier told the Salem Evening News it was the best time she’d had in months. \nSalem did this two years before the rest of the world even had the idea.\nNow Salem turns 400\, and we’re bringing it back. \nFriday\, May 1 — the 55th anniversary of the original Hello Day. The Mayor will open the evening with a proclamation reviving Hello Day for a new generation. Then the Midtown Horns take the stage on the Pedestrian Mall in front of East India Marine Hall and give downtown Salem the kind of evening it deserves. \nMay is Mental Health Awareness Month — and it turns out that the simple act of saying hello to your neighbors is one of the most powerful things you can do for your own wellbeing and theirs. Salem figured that out in 1971. We’re just picking up where they left off. \nThis is free. This is for everyone. Just show up.

SUMMARY:Love\, Your Salem opens at Old Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Old Town Hall in Salem will be transformed into a living\, breathing journey through four centuries of local history — and everyone is invited. History Alive\, Inc. is planning a free public exhibit featuring 40 remarkable Salemites who shaped the city between 1626 and 1936. The collection highlights a diverse range of people from across Salem’s long and layered past\, brought to life through displays\, audio-visual presentations\, and hands-on experiences. \nOne of the most distinctive features of the exhibit is that it will be built in public. Costume and prop makers will work right in the space\, constructing parade materials in real time. Community members and volunteers are welcome to roll up their sleeves and help build elements that will eventually appear in Salem’s August 1st Heritage Days Parade — making the creative process itself part of the experience. \nThat parade will also feature History Alive company members drawn from communities across the North Shore\, including Beverly\, Danvers\, Haverhill\, Peabody\, Rowley\, Lynn\, Salem\, Swampscott\, and Marblehead\, alongside a volunteer cast of Salem residents. The procession is designed to reflect Salem’s full community\, with participants of diverse backgrounds\, abilities\, and ages taking part. \nThe exhibit is part of Salem’s broader 400+ anniversary celebrations — a milestone marking more than four centuries since the city’s founding. History Alive’s contribution is a reminder that Salem’s story isn’t just about one moment in time\, but about the many people\, across many generations\, who made it what it is today. You’ll find the dove making crafting at other celebratory events throughout the summer in culmination with “Love\, Your Salem” on August 1st—and maybe even a time warp ball if the fancy strikes us! \nHistory Alive\, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing local history to life through performance\, education\, and community engagement. \nOld Town Hall hours are:\nThursdays 4-7 pm\nFridays 12-4 pm\nSaturdays 12-4 pm\nSundays 12-4pm

SUMMARY:Vintage Baseball Game
DESCRIPTION:Before batting helmets\, before dugouts\, before the designated hitter — there was base ball (two words\, as it was then written). Watching a match played under 1864 rules is less like attending a modern game and more like stepping into a photograph that suddenly comes to life. \nThe players take the field in period wool uniforms\, suspenders and all\, with no gloves — catching a ball barehanded was simply part of the game. Pitchers deliver the ball underhand in a smooth\, stiff-armed motion\, and the batter — called the “striker” — has considerable say in where he’d like the pitch thrown. \nCome step back in time and see baseball the way it was meant to be played! Right on the Salem Common the Providence Grays versus Dirigio Base Ball Club of Maine !

SUMMARY:Liberty Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Join us when we plant an American hybrid elm behind the Benjamin Peirce/Major Gen. Stephen Abbot monument — a reference to the original elm tree in Boston under which the Sons of Liberty gathered. This new tree will also replace the original Liberty Tree planted in Salem 50 years ago. \nSpeakers for the event will include Mayor Dominick Pangallo\, historian Charles Newhall\, and Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker. The Danvers Alarm List Company\, a group of 18th century living history reenactors\, also plan to be in attendance. \nBenjamin Peirce\, a baker and militiaman who died at age 37 in the Battle of Menotomy on April 19\, 1775\, is the only recorded Salem casualty from the first battles of the American Revolution. Research in the Historic Salem\, Inc. files indicates that Peirce lived on North Street when on Feb. 26\, 1775\, when Lt. Col. Alexander Leslie’s British troopswere stalled as they waited to cross the North Bridge. \nThe original Liberty Tree and a plaque is located in the center of Church Street in front of St. Peter’s — San Pedro’s Episocopal Church\, and was dedicated by Historic Salem on Patriots’ Day 1976 to the memory of Peirce. The monument is the first stop during Salem’s First Muster each April. The Bicentennial plaque references a Liberty Tree\, of which there have been two trees to date in the immediate area. \nWhile the original tree has since died\, Department of Conservation and Recreation Forester David Bresnahan will be planting a new American elm hybrid at that location in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary and Peirce’s sacrifice. \nThe dedication of the new tree will take place on Saturday\, June 6\, at 9:30 a.m. at the monument on Church Street.

SUMMARY:Historic New England's Annual Open House
DESCRIPTION:The annual Open House is day that all Historic New England properties are open to the public\, free of charge. During Open House\, guests interact with tour guides and hear the stories of the people and events that make each of our 38 properties unique. In Salem\, Historic New England operates Phillips House and Gedney House. Phillips House is the only mansion open to the public on Chestnut Street. Here\, we tell the story of five generations of a prominent Salem family\, and talk about the changing lives at the turn of the 20th century. Gedney House is one of the oldest houses in Salem\, and one of only two still standing that has a connection to the Witch Trials of 1692. Gedney House is a unique architectural gem that illustrates 17th century building practices and architectural change over time. During Open House\, everyone is welcome to join us to learn more about these special places. \nBoth properties provide different insights into the lives of people living in Salem from the 17th century through the 20th century. During the visit\, guests learn about the people behind some of the history’s biggest moments – from Mary Gedney\, a widow operating her own tavern during the 1692 Witch Trials\, to Stephen and Anna Phillips\, who were both members of long lines of Salem sea-faring and political families in the 20th century. We invite guests to ask questions\, be in the spaces\, and learn more about the everyday history of New Englanders. Neighbors are always welcome at Historic New England sites\, with town residents receiving free entry to properties in their communities for regular tours (additional fees apply for special events and programs). \nVisitors are welcome any time throughout the day at both sites. Please note that entry to both Phillips House and Gedney House requires stairs to enter and to view the houses in their entirety.
