DESCRIPTION:Zero Waste Salem is hosting a Repair Café as part of Salem 400+\, celebrating sustainable practices that honor our past and invest in our future. \nVolunteers will be available to mend clothing\, sew buttons\, and tinker with electronics—skills passed down through generations that help us build a more sustainable Salem for the next 400 years. \nThese free services may vary depending on volunteer availability\, but the spirit remains the same: learning from each other\, reducing waste\, and strengthening community connections through shared knowledge and resourcefulness. \nJoin us for this hands-on event where fixing things isn’t just about saving items—it’s about preserving traditions of craftsmanship while creating a more sustainable future for Salem.

SUMMARY:Salem 400+ Parade Preparation Community Workshop Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:Step Into Salem’s Past: History Alive Brings Free Interactive Exhibit to Old Town Hall\nThis summer\, Old Town Hall in Salem will be transformed into a living\, breathing journey through four centuries of local history — and everyone is invited.\nHistory Alive\, Inc. is planning a free public exhibit featuring 40 remarkable Salemites who shaped the city between 1626 and 1936. The collection highlights a diverse range of people from across Salem’s long and layered past\, brought to life through displays\, audio-visual presentations\, and hands-on experiences.\nBut this is far more than a traditional exhibit. Visitors will find a photo station stocked with period costumes and props\, where they can dress up as real figures from Salem’s history and step — however briefly — into another era. The space is designed as an interactive timeline\, with multiple entry points into the Salem story so that visitors of all ages and interests can find their own way in.\nOne of the most distinctive features of the exhibit is that it will be built in public. Costume and prop makers will work right in the space\, constructing parade materials in real time. Community members and volunteers are welcome to roll up their sleeves and help build elements that will eventually appear in Salem’s August 1st Heritage Days Parade — making the creative process itself part of the experience.\nThat parade will also feature History Alive company members drawn from communities across the North Shore\, including Beverly\, Danvers\, Haverhill\, Peabody\, Rowley\, Lynn\, Salem\, Swampscott\, and Marblehead\, alongside a volunteer cast of Salem residents. The procession is designed to reflect Salem’s full community\, with participants of diverse backgrounds\, abilities\, and ages taking part.\nAt least two creative staff members from History Alive will be present during all open hours to engage with visitors and keep the space lively.\nThe exhibit is part of Salem’s broader 400+ anniversary celebrations — a milestone marking more than four centuries since the city’s founding. History Alive’s contribution is a reminder that Salem’s story isn’t just about one moment in time\, but about the many people\, across many generations\, who made it what it is today. \nHistory Alive\, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing local history to life through performance\, education\, and community engagement. SUMMARY:Hello Day: Salem Says Hello Again!
DESCRIPTION:On May 1\, 1971\, Mayor Samuel Zoll proclaimed it “Hello Day.” Fire station bells rang across Salem at noon. Residents poured into the streets — along Essex Street\, across the Common — to do something radical in its simplicity: say hello to each other. \nA rock band made up of Salem High students played on the Common. A conceptual artist circled overhead in a plane\, photographing the whole thing from above. Channel 5 showed up. A teenager named Marian Sonier told the Salem Evening News it was the best time she’d had in months. \nSalem did this two years before the rest of the world even had the idea.\nNow Salem turns 400\, and we’re bringing it back. \nFriday\, May 1 — the 55th anniversary of the original Hello Day. The Mayor will open the evening with a proclamation reviving Hello Day for a new generation. Then the Midtown Horns take the stage on the Pedestrian Mall in front of East India Marine Hall and give downtown Salem the kind of evening it deserves. \nMay is Mental Health Awareness Month — and it turns out that the simple act of saying hello to your neighbors is one of the most powerful things you can do for your own wellbeing and theirs. Salem figured that out in 1971. We’re just picking up where they left off. \nThis is free. This is for everyone. Just show up.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a memorable evening of music\, history\, and conversation celebrating the life\, military service\, and lasting legacy of one of the American Revolution’s most celebrated — and often overlooked — figures. \nThe evening kicks off with a rousing performance by Scurvy Fellows Indeed\, a spirited crew of 18th-century privateers who will entertain with rollicking sea chanteys — audience sing-along strongly encouraged! \nHistorian Robert Booth then takes us through the compelling story of John Glover\, who was born in Salem and raised in nearby Marblehead\, used his maritime roots and family ties to shape his path to becoming a Revolutionary War hero. \nHe is followed by Larry Sands — Captain of Glover’s Marblehead Regiment — who brings Glover’s battlefield career to life with a lively overview of his major engagements and accomplishments.\nNancy Lusignan Schultz\, Chair of the Swampscott Historical Commission and President of Save the Glover! Inc.\, rounds out the presentations with the latest news on the ongoing effort to preserve General Glover’s historic farmhouse. \nThis program is part of the Conflict & Community: Salem\, Essex County\, and the American Revolution lecture series. This series is a partnership between Essex Heritage and Salem Maritime National Historical Park and highlights the unique role of Essex County communities during the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:Curator Talk - Salem as Muse: Collecting the Globe with George Schwartz
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nIn 2026\, as part of the Salem 400+ initiative\, PEM will present “Salem as Muse\,” a series of talks that highlight works represented in PEM’s collection. These programs will explore a diverse range of subjects that connect to the unique history and character of Salem\, Massachusetts. Join us for the launch of “Salem as Muse” with George Schwartz\, Curator-at-Large\, who will discuss his book Collecting the Globe. \nAs the oldest continually operating and collecting museum in the country\, PEM has seen more than two centuries of evolution and innovation since its founding in 1799. Collecting the Globe offers a window into the early days of the museum: “To escape the ‘prosaic streets’ of Salem\, Massachusetts\, in the first half of the 19th century\, local residents and travelers from across the United States and the globe came to the East India Marine Society Museum (1799–1876). Located on the town’s main thoroughfare\, Essex Street\, the museum transported individuals to another world…” \n“It is unheard of to still have the original archival material\, and the collection\, and the permanent home for an early American institution\,” says Schwartz. “You have to use the term ‘unique\,’ because we are the only one.” A comprehensive history offering fresh perspectives on museums and how they helped shape our national identity\, Collecting the Globe explores collecting\, exhibiting and interpreting a diversity of international objects and art in early America. Schwartz\, co-curator of the new installation in the East India Marine Society’s first permanent home\, East India Marine Hall\, aims to capture the dynamic history of one of the most important American museums during a pivotal time when Salem was a leading port and launching point for global trade. \nExplore the hundreds of fascinating objects on view in East India Marine Hall before or after the talk. \nIncluded with Admission. Salem residents and people who work in Salem receive free general admission upon presentation of a business card or employee ID at the admissions desk; preregistration encouraged. \nThere will be a book signing outside Morse Auditorium after the program. Books can be purchased at the event or in advance from the PEM Shop. \nAbout our presenter: George Schwartz\nGeorge Schwartz has worked on many successful PEM exhibitions and installations\, including curating Conjuring the Spirit World: Art\, Magic\, and Mediums and co-curating the new installation in the museum’s historic East India Marine Hall\, among others. His specialty and interests are in maritime art\, material culture\, early collecting and museum history. Schwartz earned his B.A. in Anthropology from Brown University\, his M.A. in Historical Archaeology from UMASS Boston and his Ph.D. in American and New England Studies from Boston University. He is the editor and lead author of Conjuring the Spirit World: Art\, Magic\, and Mediums (Rizzoli Electa\, 2024)\, which was the gold winner for Foreword Reviews’ 2024 Indie Book of the Year Awards in the Popular Culture category. SUMMARY:The 389th Anniversary of the First Muster
DESCRIPTION:The 389th Annual First Muster marks another milestone in the living legacy of America’s oldest military tradition. In 1637\, the East Regiment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony assembled on this very ground for the first time — an act that gave birth to what we know today as the National Guard. Salem has never stopped honoring that moment.\nThis year’s commemoration takes on special meaning as part of Salem 400+\, the city’s year-long celebration of 400 years of history\, community\, and resilience. The First Muster is one of the oldest chapters in that story — proof that Salem has always been a place where neighbors stand up\, show up\, and serve.\nCome celebrate Salem’s most historic tradition — and the city proud enough to have started it all.

SUMMARY:Ergot at 50: “Moldy Bread” and the Salem Witchcraft Trials
DESCRIPTION:Margo Burns is the 10th-generation great-granddaughter of Rebecca Nurse\, who was hanged in Salem in 1692 on the charge of witchcraft. She is the project manager and an associate editor of Records of the Salem Witch-Hunt\, published in 2009 by Cambridge University Press. This work is the definitive collection of transcriptions of the legal records of the episode. Burns has also done extensive research into the notion put forth in 1976 that the accusers were under the influence of an hallucinogenic toxic fungus\, ergot\, a possible explanation for their spectral visions and physical symptoms of bewitchment. On the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Linnda Caporeal original article\, “Ergotism: The Satan Loosed in Salem?” in Science magazine\, Burns explains why the general public has found it so plausible and compelling for so long. \nPlease register here!

SUMMARY:Pequot War and the First Muster: An Evening of Reflection\, History\, and Community
DESCRIPTION:The House of the Seven Gables is proud to invite you to an evening of reflection\, history\, and community. Special guest speakers from the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation\, alongside local Author and Historian\, Benjamin Shallop\, will discuss Salem’s role in and the lasting impact of the Pequot War (1636-1638) ahead of the First Muster commemoration on April 11th. \nThe frequently glossed-over\, hidden\, or entirely omitted history of the Pequot War\, a military conflict that turned the tides of American history\, will be brought to the table during this event that centers truth-telling and cultural competency. Learn about Salem’s involvement in this devastating event that eventually led to a genocide of hundreds of Pequot people at Mistick.
