DESCRIPTION:On May 1\, 1971\, Mayor Samuel Zoll proclaimed it “Hello Day.” Fire station bells rang across Salem at noon. Residents poured into the streets — along Essex Street\, across the Common — to do something radical in its simplicity: say hello to each other. \nA rock band made up of Salem High students played on the Common. A conceptual artist circled overhead in a plane\, photographing the whole thing from above. Channel 5 showed up. A teenager named Marian Sonier told the Salem Evening News it was the best time she’d had in months. \nSalem did this two years before the rest of the world even had the idea.\nNow Salem turns 400\, and we’re bringing it back. \nFriday\, May 1 — the 55th anniversary of the original Hello Day. The Mayor will open the evening with a proclamation reviving Hello Day for a new generation. Then the Midtown Horns take the stage on the Pedestrian Mall in front of East India Marine Hall and give downtown Salem the kind of evening it deserves. \nMay is Mental Health Awareness Month — and it turns out that the simple act of saying hello to your neighbors is one of the most powerful things you can do for your own wellbeing and theirs. Salem figured that out in 1971. We’re just picking up where they left off. \nThis is free. This is for everyone. Just show up.

DESCRIPTION:On April 25th\, Salem’s historic Derby Street waterfront transforms into a lively pirates and privateers venue. “Pirates! The Battle for Derby Street” is a swashbuckling festival packed with adventure\, history\, music and mischief for the pirates in all of us. At the heart of the festival is an epic and playful rivalry between two legendary figures: Captain John Turner of The House of the Seven Gables fame and Captain Black Sam Bellamy\, captain of the ill-fated Whydah Gally\, a pirate ship which wrecked off of the Massachusetts coast\, featured in Salem’s own Real Pirates museum. Expect a bustling pirate thoroughfare full of treasure maps and prizes\, live pirate skirmishes\, maritime lectures and demonstrations; music\, roaming performers\, artisan merchants and themed food and drink specials from local restaurants. Costumes welcome for photo ops and plenty of other surprises await! \nParticipants will want to check in starting at 10 am to pick up a treasure map and guide to the Derby Street participating merchant crew\, where treasure hunt clues will be furnished. A concluding event will take place at the end of the day featuring prizes for the winners of the treasure hunt and more entertainment. The event will conclude during daylight hours but participants are encouraged to stay longer in the area to enjoy after-festival dining\, treats and shopping in the area. \nCostumes welcome! Wear comfortable walking shoes. And bring your rain gear in case of inclement weather.

Collecting the Globe offers a window into the early days of the museum: “To escape the ‘prosaic streets’ of Salem\, Massachusetts\, in the first half of the 19th century\, local residents and travelers from across the United States and the globe came to the East India Marine Society Museum (1799–1876). His specialty and interests are in maritime art\, material culture\, early collecting and museum history. Schwartz earned his B.A. in Anthropology from Brown University\, his M.A. in Historical Archaeology from UMASS Boston and his Ph.D. in American and New England Studies from Boston University. He is the editor and lead author of Conjuring the Spirit World: Art\, Magic\, and Mediums (Rizzoli Electa\, 2024)\, which was the gold winner for Foreword Reviews’ 2024 Indie Book of the Year Awards in the Popular Culture category. Schwartz has lectured internationally and has written articles and essays for museum catalogues\, journals and magazines. SUMMARY:Ergot at 50: “Moldy Bread” and the Salem Witchcraft Trials
DESCRIPTION:Margo Burns is the 10th-generation great-granddaughter of Rebecca Nurse\, who was hanged in Salem in 1692 on the charge of witchcraft. She is the project manager and an associate editor of Records of the Salem Witch-Hunt\, published in 2009 by Cambridge University Press. This work is the definitive collection of transcriptions of the legal records of the episode. Burns has also done extensive research into the notion put forth in 1976 that the accusers were under the influence of an hallucinogenic toxic fungus\, ergot\, a possible explanation for their spectral visions and physical symptoms of bewitchment. On the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Linnda Caporeal original article\, “Ergotism: The Satan Loosed in Salem?” in Science magazine\, Burns explains why the general public has found it so plausible and compelling for so long. \nPlease register here!

The breakfast includes remarks from invited public officials and a veteran guest speaker\, along with time for informal conversation and connection. The event is free and open to the public\, with a focus on ensuring Vietnam veterans feel seen\, valued\, and appreciated for their service\, many of whom returned home without the recognition afforded to other generations. \nThe Vietnam Veterans Breakfast hosted by Lynn Swampscott DAV Chapter 64 supports Salem 400+’s commitment to Commemoration and Recognition by honoring  Salem’s local veterans whose service is part of the region’s lived history. Many Vietnam veterans built their lives in Salem before and after their military service. Their experiences reflect the city’s long relationship with national service\, sacrifice\, and civic responsibility.
