SUMMARY:Historic New England's Annual Open House
DESCRIPTION:The annual Open House is day that all Historic New England properties are open to the public\, free of charge. During Open House\, guests interact with tour guides and hear the stories of the people and events that make each of our 38 properties unique. In Salem\, Historic New England operates Phillips House and Gedney House. Phillips House is the only mansion open to the public on Chestnut Street. Here\, we tell the story of five generations of a prominent Salem family\, and talk about the changing lives at the turn of the 20th century. Gedney House is one of the oldest houses in Salem\, and one of only two still standing that has a connection to the Witch Trials of 1692. Gedney House is a unique architectural gem that illustrates 17th century building practices and architectural change over time. During Open House\, everyone is welcome to join us to learn more about these special places. \nBoth properties provide different insights into the lives of people living in Salem from the 17th century through the 20th century. During the visit\, guests learn about the people behind some of the history’s biggest moments – from Mary Gedney\, a widow operating her own tavern during the 1692 Witch Trials\, to Stephen and Anna Phillips\, who were both members of long lines of Salem sea-faring and political families in the 20th century. We invite guests to ask questions\, be in the spaces\, and learn more about the everyday history of New Englanders. Neighbors are always welcome at Historic New England sites\, with town residents receiving free entry to properties in their communities for regular tours (additional fees apply for special events and programs). \nVisitors are welcome any time throughout the day at both sites. Please note that entry to both Phillips House and Gedney House requires stairs to enter and to view the houses in their entirety.

SUMMARY:Remembering Bridget
DESCRIPTION:“You can tell a lot about a community by the way they treat their dead.” On the morning of June 10th\, 1692\, one woman met the hangman’s noose. It was the point of no return in the Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. Her name was Bridget Bishop. \nPreviously accused in 1680\, she was the only victim not executed in a group. Remembering her as a fellow human being is crucial to understanding the madness that ensued. Join us in person at the Salem Witch Trials Memorial on Charter Street on June 10th at 10 am for a commemoration of the 334th anniversary of the death of the first victim of the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. The short remembrance will honor this wronged woman – who was also a domestic abuse survivor – and acknowledge all victims and survivors of abuse\, prejudice\, and ignorance – past and present. This will include 17th-century poems\, floral tributes\, and information about Bridget’s life. \nFlowers donated by Voices Against Injustice will be available for the public to place tributes on the memorial stones of their choice. The remembrance will be live-streamed and available for replay via Instagram @creativecollectivema and @thepetticoatpages1693

SUMMARY:Roots of Salem: A Demonstration of Indigenous Foodways at the Mack Park Farm
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Salem’s 400th anniversary with a hands-on journey into the region’s earliest food traditions!\nJoin Indigenous artist and historian Thomas Green and community herbalist Sheilagh Cruickshank for an engaging exploration of the foods and herbs that Native peoples in and around Salem grew and used for nourishment\, healing\, and cultural practices. During this free community event\, guests will tour the Mack Park Farm and see demonstrations of what Indigenous and colonial gardens may have looked like 400 years ago. Learn how local tribes shared their farming and food knowledge with early settlers—wisdom that helped them survive New England’s harsh winters. Enjoy samples of traditional foods and beverages inspired by the flavors of the 1600s and beyond\, and discover the deep roots that continue to shape Salem’s story today.

SUMMARY:Salem 400+ Heritage Days Parade and Festival
DESCRIPTION:August 1\, 2026 \n10am Rain or Shine! \nSalem Heritage Days Parade Returns: A Journey Through 400+ Years of History \nChronological Celebration to Showcase Salem’s Rich Timeline \nRegistration is Open now! Go here to register! \nAfter more than thirty years the beloved Salem Heritage Days Parade is making its triumphant return\, brought to life through a collaborative effort between the City of Salem\, National Park Service\, Salem State University\, the Salem Police Department\, Salem Trolley\, the Salem Chamber of Commerce\, and the North Shore CDC. This diverse planning committee is working together to offer the community a unique opportunity to experience more than 400 years of Salem’s remarkable story through an innovative chronological format. Under the overarching theme of “Salem Through the Centuries” the parade will take spectators on a journey through time\, beginning with Salem’s indigenous roots and progressing through each major era that has shaped the city’s identity. \nA Timeline Come to Life \nTaking inspiration from the 1926 Tercentenary Parade\, this year’s parade structure will organize participants and floats chronologically\, creating a living timeline that flows through Salem’s streets. This approach allows viewers to experience the city’s journey from its earliest inhabitants to its modern innovations and future aspirations. \n“I’m so pleased that the City and Salem 400+ are able to bring the Heritage Days parade back to our community in our quadricentennial year!” declared Dominick Pangallo\, Salem’s Mayor. “For many of us\, memories of the Heritage Days parade are a special part of what it meant to grow up in Salem. This fun and family-friendly event celebrates all that it means to be a diverse\, optimistic\, and vibrant city. I hope everyone will be a part of the parade in 2026\, whether as a participant or a spectator!” \n“We wanted to create something that tells Salem’s complete story\,” said Jeremy Fiske\, Special Events Coordinator\, who is organizing the parade alongside Virginia “Gini” Cherol\, Salem 400+ Coordinator. “By organizing the parade chronologically\, we’re able to honor every chapter of Salem’s history while showing how all these stories connect to create the vibrant community we know today.” \nParade Structure and Participants \n“We’re providing the framework\, but we want each organization to showcase what’s meaningful to them within these guidelines\,” explained Cherol. “This approach allows for both historical structure and creative expression. It’s really about letting our community tell the parts of Salem’s story that matter most to them.” \nSalem’s 400+ years of history is vast\, vibrant and diverse. Please take the following list as inspiration for your parade ideas: \nIndigenous Heritage – Leading the parade \nMassachusett Tribe\nColonial Era (1600s) \nArbella Float featuring Roger Conant\nThe First Muster\nSalem Witch Trials\nRevolutionary War Period (1700s) \nLeslie’s Retreat\nAmerican Revolution\n19th Century Maritime & Literary Salem (1800s) \nNathaniel Hawthorne\nAge of Sail\nPublic Education and Museums\nCharlotte Forten Grimke\nNaumkeag Steam Cotton Company\nAlexander Graham Bell\n 20th Century Innovation \nParker Brothers\nCaroline Emmerton and the House of the Seven Gables\nClassic car displays\nSalem’s Sister City relationship with Ota\, Japan\nHaunted Happenings\nHocus Pocus\nModern Salem (2000s) \nContemporary community organizations\nEl Punto Urban Art Museum and other public art\nTrolley for the Council on Aging\nSalem’s Current elected officials\nSalem’s Future \nLocal schools presenting “Salem in the Future”\nTimeless Themes \nImmigrant Communities\nArchitecture\nArts and Culture\nThroughout the parade\, marching bands\, color guards\, and various performing organizations will be interspersed to create a festive atmosphere while maintaining the chronological flow. \nCommunity Participation and Creative Freedom \nThe parade organizers are encouraging participating groups to bring their own creative interpretations to the various time periods. This is fundamentally a way for the community to showcase what they want to highlight in Salem’s rich history. \nOrganizations are invited to create floats representing different centuries\, while other groups and organizations are encouraged to participate in ways that align with the chronological theme while reflecting their unique contributions to Salem’s story. The goal is to create a parade that truly represents what Salem’s diverse community wants to celebrate about their shared heritage. \nParade Route Details \nThe parade will begin at the O’Keefe Center at 225 Canal Street\, taking participants and spectators on a scenic journey through Salem’s historic neighborhoods: \nStart: O’Keefe Center\, 225 Canal St\nRoute: Down Forest Avenue toward Lafayette Street\nTurn: Left onto Lafayette Street\nContinue: Along Lafayette Street to Derby Street intersection\nFinal Turn: Right onto Derby Street\nFinish: Salem Maritime National Historical Park \nMore Than Just a Parade \nThe Heritage Day Parade represents more than entertainment—it’s a community celebration that acknowledges Salem’s complex and rich history while building connections between past and present residents. \n“This parade is about recognizing that Salem’s story didn’t start with European colonization\, and it certainly doesn’t end in 1692\,” noted Fiske. “We’re celebrating the indigenous peoples who were here first\, the many waves of immigrants who made Salem home\, and the innovations and traditions that continue to shape our city today.” \nThe chronological format ensures that all aspects of Salem’s heritage receive recognition\, from the indigenous peoples who first inhabited the land\, through the colonial period\, maritime trade era\, literary renaissance\, industrial growth\, and into Salem’s role as a modern and diverse community. Throughout the parade\, the organizers also plan to weave in the story of immigration—the many waves of people from different cultures and backgrounds who have made Salem their home across all these centuries\, contributing to the rich tapestry that makes the city what it is today. \nPlanning and Participation \nOrganized by the award winning team that brought the Leslie’s Retreat standoff to life in February 2025\, the parade represents months of community collaboration and planning.\nLocal organizations\, schools\, cultural groups\, and businesses are invited to participate within the chronological framework\, creating their own interpretations of Salem’s history.\nThe parade promises to be both educational and entertaining\, offering residents and visitors alike a unique way to experience Salem’s remarkable journey through more than four centuries of history. \nRegistration is Open now! Go here to register! \nOnce your participation is confirmed you will receive a registration packet with detailed instructions regarding parking and other parade logistics.
