Today\, Salem is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the region—but that didn’t happen by accident. \nThis free\, guided walking experience explores Salem’s history through the lens of dogs\, moving from the fear and superstition of 1692\, through the structured world of law and industry\, to the rise of companion animals and modern dog-friendly culture. Participants will visit key sites including Charter Street Cemetery\, Front Street\, Salem Common\, and Derby Wharf\, with short\, story-driven stops that bring the past to life. \nThis is not a traditional tour\, but a reflective\, narrative experience designed to connect participants with Salem’s history in a new and accessible way. \nWell-behaved\, leashed dogs are welcome. \nThis event is designed as a limited summer series and will be offered on 3–4 dates in July and August. Preferred times include weekday evenings and weekend mornings (to ensure that it is comfortable for any accompanying dogs). Each walk will last approximately 45 minutes and will be limited to small groups (8–12 participants) to maintain an intimate\, story-driven experience. There will also be a pop-up market featuring local Black-owned businesses and Black non-profits and service organizations. Community partners such as the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salem\, the Salem Public Library\, the House of the Seven Gables\, and more will also be attending with free activities and giveaways. Salem Historical Tours will offer a free hour-long Black history tour of Salem\, which will start at 1:30pm from Charlotte Forten Park. Signs-ups for this tour will begin at 1:00pm\, with a limit of 40 available spots. \nThe City of Salem is partnering with the Peabody Essex Museum to bring Jo-Mo-Mé Dance Arts to the Jam this year\, with a contemporary ballet performance exploring connection\, individuality\, and human resilience through fluid movement and striking physicality. Featuring two dynamic duets and a powerful solo\, the works blend athleticism with emotional depth\, embodying the company’s bold artistic voice and commitment to storytelling through dance. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of The Real Pirate Museum\, the Jam will also feature live music from Coco Brown and The Invitation\, led by Nicole Harris. Remembering her as a fellow human being is crucial to understanding the madness that ensued. Join us in person at the Salem Witch Trials Memorial on Charter Street on June 10th at 10 am for a commemoration of the 334th anniversary of the death of the first victim of the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. The short remembrance will honor this wronged woman – who was also a domestic abuse survivor – and acknowledge all victims and survivors of abuse\, prejudice\, and ignorance – past and present.
