SUMMARY:"Colonial Cures for Scurvy" Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Scurvy —a debilitating disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C\, was a scourge among sailors\, with hundreds of thousands perishing during the colonial period\, and during the American Revolutionary War it became a critical strategic factor that severely weakened the British Royal Navy and affected the health of the Continental Army. The efforts to improve healthy conditions on-board sailing vessels were vital for Salem’s maritime success. \nBefore the concept of vitamin deficiency was known to the world\, physicians struggled to find what caused the disease. That did not stop them from developing both herbal and chemical treatments with mixed results. The story of finding a true cure spans the centuries\, from ancient references to sailors’ superstitions to the birth of “clinical trials” in the 18th century.\nJoin Dan Marshall as he dives into both European and American colonial sources that shed light on the effects of scurvy on the body and the many colonial cures recorded for posterity. Afterwards\, he will demonstrate the tools and techniques of turning simple ingredients into medicine in the 17th & 18th centuries. \nDan Marshall is a museum professional who has shared his love of history with the public for over 25 years. He has created and presented countless hands-on public history events\, school tour programs\, and lectures on a wide range of historical topics. With experience at Colonial Williamsburg\, The House of the Seven Gables\, Lexington Historical Society\, and the City of Salem\, Dan is currently serving as Vice President of the Salem Historical Society. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the National Park Service and Essex Heritage as part of a series; Conflict & Community: Salem\, Essex County\, and the American Revolution. As the nation marks the 250th anniversary of American independence\, this dynamic series brings together diverse voices and experts to examine the Revolution through its many perspectives\, lived experiences\, and lasting legacies.

SUMMARY:Lynn Swampscott DAV Chapter 64 Annual Vietnam Veterans Breakfast and Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Lynn Swampscott DAV Chapter 64 Annual Vietnam Veterans Breakfast and Ceremony is dedicated to honoring local veterans who served during the Vietnam War. The event provides space for recognition\, reflection\, and gratitude\, bringing veterans\, elected officials\, community leaders\, and residents together in a respectful and welcoming setting. The breakfast includes remarks from invited public officials and a veteran guest speaker\, along with time for informal conversation and connection. The event is free and open to the public\, with a focus on ensuring Vietnam veterans feel seen\, valued\, and appreciated for their service\, many of whom returned home without the recognition afforded to other generations. \nThe Vietnam Veterans Breakfast hosted by Lynn Swampscott DAV Chapter 64 supports Salem 400+’s commitment to Commemoration and Recognition by honoring Salem’s local veterans whose service is part of the region’s lived history. Many Vietnam veterans built their lives in Salem before and after their military service. Their experiences reflect the city’s long relationship with national service\, sacrifice\, and civic responsibility. By publicly acknowledging Vietnam veterans in a community setting\, the breakfast contributes to a more complete and inclusive understanding of Salem’s past and present. \nThe breakfast aligns with Salem 400+’s goal of Community and Civic Engagement by creating a space where Salem’s residents\, veterans\, local leaders\, and elected officials come together around shared responsibility and respect. It encourages participation across generations and backgrounds and reinforces the idea that civic life includes honoring service and listening to those who have served. The event is intentionally accessible. It reflects the tradition of community gatherings that strengthen connection\, foster dialogue\, and affirm the ongoing commitment to those who have contributed to its civic life. \nRegistration is required\, please register here.

SUMMARY:Curator Talk - Salem as Muse: Collecting the Globe with George Schwartz
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nIn 2026\, as part of the Salem 400+ initiative\, PEM will present “Salem as Muse\,” a series of talks that highlight works represented in PEM’s collection. These programs will explore a diverse range of subjects that connect to the unique history and character of Salem\, Massachusetts. Join us for the launch of “Salem as Muse” with George Schwartz\, Curator-at-Large\, who will discuss his book Collecting the Globe. \nAs the oldest continually operating and collecting museum in the country\, PEM has seen more than two centuries of evolution and innovation since its founding in 1799. Collecting the Globe offers a window into the early days of the museum: “To escape the ‘prosaic streets’ of Salem\, Massachusetts\, in the first half of the 19th century\, local residents and travelers from across the United States and the globe came to the East India Marine Society Museum (1799–1876). Located on the town’s main thoroughfare\, Essex Street\, the museum transported individuals to another world…” \n“It is unheard of to still have the original archival material\, and the collection\, and the permanent home for an early American institution\,” says Schwartz. “You have to use the term ‘unique\,’ because we are the only one.” A comprehensive history offering fresh perspectives on museums and how they helped shape our national identity\, Collecting the Globe explores collecting\, exhibiting and interpreting a diversity of international objects and art in early America. Schwartz\, co-curator of the new installation in the East India Marine Society’s first permanent home\, East India Marine Hall\, aims to capture the dynamic history of one of the most important American museums during a pivotal time when Salem was a leading port and launching point for global trade. \nExplore the hundreds of fascinating objects on view in East India Marine Hall before or after the talk. \nIncluded with Admission. Salem residents and people who work in Salem receive free general admission upon presentation of a business card or employee ID at the admissions desk; preregistration encouraged. \nThere will be a book signing outside Morse Auditorium after the program. Books can be purchased at the event or in advance from the PEM Shop. \nAbout our presenter: George Schwartz\nGeorge Schwartz has worked on many successful PEM exhibitions and installations\, including curating Conjuring the Spirit World: Art\, Magic\, and Mediums and co-curating the new installation in the museum’s historic East India Marine Hall\, among others. His specialty and interests are in maritime art\, material culture\, early collecting and museum history. Schwartz earned his B.A. in Anthropology from Brown University\, his M.A. in Historical Archaeology from UMASS Boston and his Ph.D. in American and New England Studies from Boston University. He is the editor and lead author of Conjuring the Spirit World: Art\, Magic\, and Mediums (Rizzoli Electa\, 2024)\, which was the gold winner for Foreword Reviews’ 2024 Indie Book of the Year Awards in the Popular Culture category. Schwartz has lectured internationally and has written articles and essays for museum catalogues\, journals and magazines. He is an honorary member of the Salem Marine Society\, and also teaches a course on material culture at Tufts University in the Museum Studies program. \nIncluded with Admission. SUMMARY:Remembering Bridget
DESCRIPTION:“You can tell a lot about a community by the way they treat their dead.” On the morning of June 10th\, 1692\, one woman met the hangman’s noose. It was the point of no return in the Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. Her name was Bridget Bishop. \nPreviously accused in 1680\, she was the only victim not executed in a group. Remembering her as a fellow human being is crucial to understanding the madness that ensued. Join us in person at the Salem Witch Trials Memorial on Charter Street on June 10th at 10 am for a commemoration of the 334th anniversary of the death of the first victim of the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Hysteria. The short remembrance will honor this wronged woman – who was also a domestic abuse survivor – and acknowledge all victims and survivors of abuse\, prejudice\, and ignorance – past and present. This will include 17th-century poems\, floral tributes\, and information about Bridget’s life. \nFlowers donated by Voices Against Injustice will be available for the public to place tributes on the memorial stones of their choice. The remembrance will be live-streamed and available for replay via Instagram @creativecollectivema and @thepetticoatpages1693
